Today’s brush with a tsunami may have seem a let-down for some, but if you have never been in Hawaii for any natural disaster (or a dock strike…) you cannot imagine the destruction that can happen. Remember Hurricane Iniki? How about Hurricane Iwa? I do. I remember leaving my car in the parking lot of the Hilton Hawaiian Village (we were told not to drive) walking mid-day all the way home to lower-Manoa….pregnant with my first son. I even remember what I was wearing that day. With Iniki, I remember filling up my car with essential papers, family essentials, taping up the windows, and then creating an alcove with a futon between two beds for a place my sons to ‘hunker-down’. We made a game out of it.
So, we must be thankful for small blessings for those of us in Hawaii. Thankful for a company that let us go early from work ‘just in case’, thankful for the ‘boredom of the day’, thankful for the State taking precautionary measures, and thankful we are not tonight picking up the pieces of a morning disaster.
